Head's on the pillow. Body stretched out. Lying on my right side. Left leg slightly bent upwards. I guess I might have looked a little like the kid's plastic green army man on his belly. You know, the one us older people had back before there were video games or cell phones. Blanket somewhere below my neck, who knows. The time was about 1:30ish in the morning. I'm riding in REM sleep. Completely zonked with a scenario playing out in my dreams. Things are happening, people are doing, words are exchanging, and all of a sudden ... BAMM! I'm awake. What in the hell did I just dream? Wow. I lie there in bed for the next thirty minutes trying to wrap my head around what just went down in the Bain brain. I struggle to wake up completely but find it easy to fit all the neurological bits and pieces together from my dream. They were all still so vivid. I roll over and look at the phone. Yeah, it's 2:00 in the AM. Wide awake.
So, after my thirty minutes of puzzle piecing, I decide that if I don't get up and write it down then I will lose it almost entirely. Wait, what's this? Yep, now I'm actually doing just that. Headed to the office and ready to try and recreate my dream into something readable. Inspiration doesn't follow any time of day rules, exclusively. I was out and now I'm up. Might as well get'r done. I fire up the old computer and stretch out the phalanges. Ready, set, GO! I start to type and am actually amazed at how easily the bits and pieces transfer from brain to keys. Wow, this level of ease doesn't happen that often. It's like the infamous unicorn. It does exist but it's rare to ever get a glimpse of it. Click, click, clickity, click, backspace, click. Shazam! Short story saved. From REM to written and I don't think I lost an ounce of it. It's a strange little story, though. A bit odd. But that is quite alright. You see, that's exactly what I need. This little gem (haha, some of you might classify it more as a 'germ') will eventually end up in a compilation I am putting together.
Future tease-
One of my current projects in work (yeah, I got a few stewing) is a compilation of short stories that I have written. Been slapping some down on the keys for a little while now and storing them back down in the Ol' tater cellar. When I get as many as I need, I'm gonna sandwich them all together and stuff them between a front and back cover to send them out to you, the reader. Keep watching that horizon because it won't be too incredibly long before I'm ready to serve them up. The name of the book with be:
Main title- Dark Places & Odd Faces
Subtitle- A Compilation of Short Stories about Unusual Situations
>>>UPDATE RETRACTION<<<
Ugh. I've fallen victim to the cardinal mistake ... lack of due diligence. After stumbling upon another published author whose compilation has ... surprise ... the close to almost exact same title, I am now obligated to back up and edit this post. I am still going to put my works together in a short story compilation but am now forced to present them under a new title. No worries. I've got this. Carry on.
Yeah, how about that weird ass book title? Quite fitting, actually. Why? Well, because the stories I'm jamming in there are a bit ... how shall we put it(?) ... different. How so? You'll see, thus the subtitle two words ... Unusual Situations. When it's out, check it out. Give it a try and ask "why, just why?" Haha. I really look forward to getting this little gem/germ out there. Each story is short but as a whole it will cover an array of different topics for you to chew on.
Back to the subject of today's title, REM to written. Waking up at 1:30 and deciding to be up for the rest of the day actually kicked me hard. I was good for quite some time but when the clock hit around 2:30 -3:00 ... forget about it. I crashed hard for a little powerless nap. Not power, powerless. My brain fought, lost, and shut the hell down, hard and fast. I ended up getting back up to watch the Chiefs beat the Cowboys but just prior to that ... OMG, I think I might have been borderline brain dead. Yeah, you check out my Dark Places & Odd Faces and you might actually accuse me of just that. Well, to sum it all up ... I truly, truly relished the given gift of dream dessert and the ability to capture it all with ease and absolutely do hope the glittery fairies (who control the levers that, once pulled, open up the mind to let it create at will) will smile upon me again as I sleep. It will be rough, I'm sure, to survive the fallout that comes after early A.M. REM to written inspiration but I will just have to deal with it when I cross that bridge. It's rare but it is immensely appreciated.
Next day update:
So, I wake up the following day (believe it or not at 1:30 A.M. again) and find it much easier to brush off the Sandman. I take a quick evaluation up north in the Ol'Bain brain to see if the fairies have left me a little treat. NOTHING. Come on, man. I couldn't remember a single thing that might have happened in dream land. Did I dream, did I not? Don't know. Couldn't find even a morsel on the ground. Oh well. Quick decision ... shut it down and go back to sleep.
Zzzzzzzzz! It didn't take any effort. I wonder if the fairies would consider observing the Daylight Savings Time fall back version of one hour extra sleep? That too would be appreciated.
Just like my D.P. & O.F. stories will be, so holds true to today's message, short and sweet. People, have a great day out there, today. Remember what's important in life and remember to love.
Until then, continue to feed your brain. You owe it to yourself.
